Sushi

Besides being obsessed with baby lambs, our other obsession is sushi. My husband and youngest daughter could take it or leave it, but Maddie, Alyson and I could literally eat it for every meal.

We make our own Nori (seaweed) rolls with various things inside and eat it at least 2 times a week. Depending on what we have in the house, we use crab meat, tuna (can or raw), salmon (can or raw), tilapia (cooked) plus any and all veggies we have available. We use a sushi dipping sauce recipe from Ina Garten's cookbook - you know, the Barefoot Contessa? It is to die for.

For Christmas, my sister-in-law gave us a Cuisinart rice cooker and it has made my life so much easier in the sushi department. You just put the rice and the water in, turn it on and forget about it until it 'dings'. Perfect sushi rice every time.

On our trip to South Carolina, right across from the hotel was a small Japanese sushi restaurant and Maddie and I ate there at least once a day for the entire 5 days we were there.

We buy our Nori sheets, soy sauce, seaweed paste, minced ginger and wasabi paste in bulk at one of the many Asian food markets in St. Paul and that makes it much more economical.

So, do any of you out there make your own sushi and if so, would you pass on any recipes? All sushi is basically the same, but you never know when someone puts a 'twist' on theirs that we might like to try!

Just for fun, here's a picture of my girls stuffing their faces with the stuff - they'd love me for this, wouldn't they?

Mmmm. I love sushi, too. I love the big rolls you get at the sushi place, with all kinds of different fish...I like the little rolls like you make...I like just plain fish and rice (sashimi?). I even like tempura and teriyaki. Yummy.

I am a sushi wimp-only crab and shrimp-but I could eat it for lunch every single day. That's how much I love it.

I <3 all sushi sashimi whatever-add-an-i to make it yummy. For christmas I got sushi making lessons for my beau and I, so we're going to learn to go pick out sushi grade fish, how to carve it, and how to make certain rolls! I'll pass on any interesting ones we come across.

i also have this book called The Encyclopedia of Sushi Rolls, pretty handy to have around. It teaches you how to make funny shapes with sushi like bears, and santas, and then how to make letters inside the sushi using different colored ingredients. Fun!
