A Ghost Story

While staying with my dad and stepmom for Thanksgiving, one of their friends, Cathy, opened up her house to us for more sleeping room. Even though my dad has a house that should be in Fine Living magazine, they only have one guest room, so we were a little short on 'bed' space.

Me, John and my brother volunteered to go two houses down and stay at Cathy's place to sleep. My dad takes us down to the house and starts to show us around. After taking through all 5 bedrooms and showing us where everything was, almost as an afterthought, he says the following:

"Now, if you happen to hear something strange, don't get freaked out, it's just Mildred and Sherman." Huh??

Who the hell are Mildred and Sherman?

Here's the story.

Not long after Cathy moved into her house, she started to hear strange voices. She could never quite make out what the voices were saying, but it was the voice of a man and a woman and they were definitely having a conversation that was slightly muffled. Of course, Cathy was pretty frightened by this and for the first month she lived in the house, she would sleep with her bedroom door shut and locked. This seemed to cause the voices to happen more often and get louder. Finally, after being scared to death and sleeping behind a locked door, one night she opened her bedroom door and screamed out into the dark air, "I'm not going to be scared anymore and I'm not going to be a prisoner in my own house!" That night, she slept with the door open and the voices stopped temporarily. Now she hears the voices sporadically and does not feel threatened.

One day there was a knock on her front door. She opened the door and it was the woman she had bought the house from. She was coming over to see how Cathy was doing and if she was happy with the house. After making small talk, Cathy said to the woman, "there is one thing that I want to ask you about." The woman cut her off and said, "I know what you are going to say,....the voices." She proceeded to tell Cathy that her family had experienced the same thing and after many months of being scared, decided they were a non-threatening presence and learned to live with it.

Enter my stepmom. Cathy had never mentioned to my stepmom anything about the voices. Jeanne (stepmom) went over to take in Cathy's mail while she was on vacation. After taking in the mail, she needed to go to the bathroom, so she stepped into the bathroom, leaving the door open, and while she was on the toilet, she heard voices. It was a man and a woman having a muffled conversation. She quickly slammed the bathroom door thinking someone was home and she just wasn't aware of it. After finishing up in the bathroom, she came out saying, "hello? Who's here?" No one answered. She went through the entire house and there was no one there. As fast as she could, she left the house and told my dad, who is the biggest skeptic in the world and laughed at her.

Upon Cathy returning from her trip, Jeanne wasn't sure how to tell her about the voices and didn't want to seem crazy. After some thought, she approached Cathy and told her she had something crazy she wanted to talk to her about. Right away, Cathy knew what Jeanne was going to say and said, "I'm so sorry I didn't tell you. I completely forgot and truly didn't think you would hear them as little as you were going to be in the house. It was Mildred and Sherman. This is what I named them." Of course, Jeanne now thought Cathy was crazy and if she hadn't heard it with her own ears, would NOT believe a word of it.

Enter, us. My dad just happens to mention this right before we are to go to sleep in this place? I was fucking freaked out and wanted to go back to my dad's house and sleep on the floor. John thought the whole thing was hilarious and talked me into staying. My brother wasn't so sure either, especially b/c he was sleeping in the basement of this house!

Well, we stayed at the house for 3 nights and even though I kept my ears open and didn't get much sleep, Mildred and Sherman never made themselves known. Now, I actually believe in this kind of stuff, although I am also one of those people that needs to experience it myself before I'm sure. So, the jury is still out on Mildred and Sherman, but it sure made for an exciting couple of nights.

As you can see, I've included some pictures of Cathy's place, a beautiful home with so many unique pieces of furniture and accessories that it is truly like a museum, which adds to the 'freaked-out' factor when you are aware there are a couple of ghosts sharing your space.

How about all of you, do you believe in ghosts? If you do or have any good stories, do tell!

More pictures tomorrow.

BAH! The second ghost post I've read tonight!

NO MORE BLOG READING AT NIGHT FOR ME!

I believe in spirits and energies, and have experienced them myself at an old work place, and there were at least another dozen people who had also shared similar stories.

I'm going to go read some nice cooking magazines now. :-)

BTW - I love that she named them.

That last picture scares me more than any ghost could. Ugh! What an ugly, creepy looking thing to have in your house!

I'm a complete non-believer in the supernatural. I suppose I'm one of those gotta see it to believe it people.

I totally believe in ghosts and such...but then, I've experienced them myself. In one large mass, actually. It's a long story, but one I'll be willing to tell sometime soon...just remind me!

Sorry you didn't get to hear them!! Maybe next time :D

Cherry - what the hell, girl? do you sleep? i saw you commented on here late, then you came back? you must be one of those people that can function on no sleep. Hope you were able to get to sleep after me creeping you out!

Green tshirt - isn't that statue freaky?? Truly, there were all kinds of things like that all over the house - it definitely added to the creep factor.

Sadie - I would love to hear your story - let me know when you post about it, will you?

Thanks for reading ladies!

Wow......I'd gladly share that home with a couple of ghosts :-) I don't know whether I think ghosts are around or not. I have never seen nor heard any evidence of them but that doesn't mean they're not out there.

Wow! They should have someone professional come out and see what's keeping them from "going into the light." That's actually a very cool story! Keep us posted if anything new develops!

I've had a number of ghostly experiences, the first one when I went camping with my dad as a kid. That was scary. But realized that there's no harm from them, just freaky. There is one in our house now. After months of thinking I saw something out of the corner of my eyes, I asked my husband and he said "oh, sure, that guy who used to live here?" like it was totally normal. ha! Hubby sees him really clearly. I'm glad I don't.

Since I was little I've always wanted a ghostly encounter. I wonder if the reality would be quite as romantic and cool as I image it to be.

I do believe in spooks, I do I do I DO believe in spooks.

We're all made out of energy, so that energy does something when we die...
